A stack of small dumbbell weightsFrom the running shoes, monthly gym membership, money spent on athletic gear, to the cost of a new bike, getting in shape can definitely strain the wallet. Do not despair because there are a lot of simple ways to keep your waist and your budget trim.

  1. Shop around for a gym membership. Many gym memberships offer discounts at certain times of the year. Many gyms, such as Bally’s and Gold’s, offer a free seven day pass so that you can check out the gym for a week before making a decision.  Ask about month to month gym memberships that will not tie you down to a gym for an extended period of time.
  2. Consider buying fitness equipment in your house to make a home gym. Some things, such as an inflatable exercise ball and dumbbells, are very affordable. If you can afford it, you may want to think about buying a treadmill or a stationary bike to use at home. Other ideas for a home gym: a jump rope, a chin-up bar, and/or tubing (for resistance training).
  3. Think about cheap ways to work out. Hiking is a great activity and can be done extremely inexpensively; all you need is a safe trail, good shoes, and water. Running is another great workout that requires nearly no money to pick up. After dinner, you could take an hour walk around your neighborhood to burn calories. You could also start a running/walking group with a few friends to make the experience more fun.
  4. Many of the best workouts are also available on DVD, VHS, even Netflix. If you have a DVD player and some free room available, you can do a workout at home. This is great for a rainy day.
  5. Shop around for fitness gear. Places like Target, Ross, Marshalls, and even thrift stores have discount fitness wear, such as running shoes, leggings, and athletic socks. It is important to feel comfortable and supported in your fitness gear, so choose wisely.
