Fun in the sunAs the weather gets warmer, our minds turn to spending time outdoors. There are some easy ways you can have an enjoyable family outing without spending a lot of money.

Think Local
Lots of articles suggest state and national parks as bargain destinations. They are. But don’t neglect your local parks and community playgrounds. These nearby getaways provide a nice diversion for your family and are completely free. No, there aren’t geysers or herds of Caribou to be seen, but there is plenty of fun for you and your family.

Pack Snacks or Make it a Picnic

Meal planning reduces unexpected costs for treats. Pack a cooler or backpack with refilled water bottles and protein rich snacks. You and your kids will be going strong for hours!

Protect Yourself
It’s no fun to have a houseful of sunburned or bug bitten people. Prevention is key. So bring along sunscreen and bug repellent whenever you’re outdoors. Other useful items to have on hand are a few bandaids, antibiotic ointment, and damp wipes.

Bring Toys
How many times have you heard, “this is boring?” Your children will find spending time outside more enjoyable when they have the right tools. While a Frisbee, baseball gloves, and football are trusted standbys, consider bringing along some alternatives:

  • Do you have a nature enthusiast? Borrow a book about bugs and pack a magnifying glass.
  • Do you have younger children? Bubbles are always a hit.
  • Finally, do not underestimate the power of collecting things. Bring along some zip-top bags and let your kids gather leaves, twigs, flowers and petals at their whim. Later on, you can create an artistic collage with your natural collection.

Enjoy Yourself
Remember, this is a family outing - you should have fun too! Bring along a book, a sketchpad, your camera or an MP3 player. Find time to watch your children while doing something you enjoy. You made the day possible, and with careful planning you and your family will have a great day outdoors.
